UseNet

Ok, This is a short video that i came across that talks about a Microsoft Research Project by the name of NetScan. Its a very self explanatory video, which i found to be very informative and good talking points. there were many points that were raised.

Please keep in mind that this was published a couple of years back, and the project was eventually scrapped by Microsoft. But the ideas and principles i think are still relevant for online communities till this date.

so basically this is an internet discussion system?
was it like the birth of social networks because users were
able to rread and post messages then gradually other companies
were able to use this as their template to start of a
private social network. or do i have the whole concept wrong?

It would take a significant improvement for HI5 to reach the heights of Facebook or Twitter.

Very informative video, how what was the purpose of Usenet.

Is it the basis of a feedback forum?

My understanding of the video is that they were designing a computer program/software called NETSCAN. It can analyse the browsing habits of individuals registered on USENET, which will help them provide better online experience for its users.

I think the idea was innovative. Shame the project fell through.

@Kim - Yes UseNet was a massive online community covering every interest under the sun - in a sense I think you can call it the birth of the social network because it provided users to collectively get together to share information. It was both a Public and Private online community similar to the likes of Facebook and others.

@Theo - The main purpose of the research project from Microsoft was to increase their knowledge and understanding of online communities by developing a tool that actually data mined these communities.

@Haz - That’s exactly the aim. Yea it’s sad it never got very far but I don’t believe there would have been a massive market for this product - its almost similar to Google data mining the world wide web it can only be useful to those who have an interest in that particular network.
