Private Social Networks

This is my first post on private social networks. This particular social network allows you to build different types of social networks, from a local campus network to brand-building communication tools for companies and its clients.
You are also able to invite people into a group allowing for communication with the group members.
I have not heard of elgg before, however I can see how this social network is an award winning one.  It hosts social networks for some high profile companies. The lack of awareness of this particular social network is perhaps its slight downfall, if it improves on this, it could rival other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

Great Post Theo! This is a great idea, I see this as a offline installation version of my Ning network which handles all the installs and managing the network is solely online.

This would be a great tool and I can see the benefits especially for SME's who don't have the budget to splash out on a fancy online Community to take the Open Source root.

The only negative criticism I can make is that it does leave a lot of work for the Administrator to do - as in ensuring that the system is always running and the installation of widgets might not be to every businesses needs.

But besides that I can see that there is alot of promise to this.

What Industry would you recommend will benefit from this type of community?

The website targets businesses, schools and universities; I guess all three would benefit from it. It's open source as well (always good to find free stuff :D).

However @Theo, I don't see how this website can ever rival Facebook and Twitter even if they advertised in every country in the world. It's not a social network, they just help you with templates and stuff for building your own social network. Unless I got the whole thing wrong???

Yes I Believe that also Charities would benefit from this community tool mainly. Its a free service and it can be hosted on their own servers at very little cost.

The only issue that i can raise is that they would be no real need for the service unless its to generate interest in the charity and allow its members to interact and discuss creative ways of raising money.

But never-the-less its a viable method of creating interest in any organisation.

I have not heard of this site before. I don't really find it interesting because it doesn't have anything that attracts my attention like Facebook. It is like a a discussion board, unlike Facebook it does not have games, have friends in common,or enable you to find people that you know.

However I can see that it can be educational because it allows schools and universities to upload discussions and helps business make their brand more awarable, but I do agree with Haz that I don't see how it can be classified as a social network. The whole concept of the site is to join discussions with other groups or people.

Yes I understand where both of you are coming from.

But once again i think its important to remember that its not only social networks that we are researching.

Any Online Community, that can be used as a private network also falls in to that arena.
