Hello Guys, This is my first post that i have found for a private social network,
the website that i found allows user to actually create their very own social network, they can then invite those that they would like to share it with and thus making it a good example for a private Social Network.
Ning
I have actually heard about this website before from a review website a few years ago, but on further investigation it appears they have made some great improvements, with features that competes with the likes of Facebook and Myspace.

what makes thsi social network any diffent to facebook or twitter
I can't make a comment about the difference between facebook, twitter, and ning because i don't use social networks myself.
@Derick, what kind of investigation did you carry out, and what improvements did you notice on the website since you read the review about it?
Personally i don't think the Ning website will go on to be a massive success because it charges for its services which can discourage people to use it.
ok,
@Kim the idea of this social network is to put the control of creating the social network into the hands of those who would like it. This key feature of Ning is that the creator gives access only to those who they will to share it with.
@Haz We are not being asked to comment on the difference between the social networks - we have to research any 'Private Social Network' it just happens that Facebook and others fall into that category but there are plenty of other private networks that we can discuss.
The main improvements that i noticed was that initially there was no feature for users of Ning to be able to instant message others, but in the improved version creators of Private Networks can include this feature to allow their users to instant message others such as Facebook.
I agree with you Haz, charging for a service is never a good idea but considering the features that are being provided it allows for investment into new technologies etc. Also bare in mind on the creator of the social network has to pay, all others they invite use the service for free, so it really depends on the creators needs.

I have looked at your private social network. How popular is this social network? Do organisations use this social network?
@ Haz, it never charged before but because the company was not making any profit, the only way they could obtain any profit was to start charging premium fares in order to pay the bills. There was actually an article about this on the guardian website stating (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/apr/16/ning-social-network-cutbacks) Over its life, the service has received about $120m in venture capital backing, but does not appear to have made a profit. With regards to paying for a social network, I personally would not pay because I don’t see any benefit that its giving me, yes I can socialize and meet new people, but you can also do that if you go out, at the gym etc, however if you were an introvert person and just like keeping yourself to yourself but can socialize online then I guess I would consider paying.
@ Theo, ning was a popular social networking site since 2007, in 2008 in hosted over 500,000 networks and by 2009 it had 4.7 million unique visitors and surpassed 1 million social networks and now 2010 it has 2 million networks with 44 million registered users; It has popular networks such as Chris Pirillo's Geeks! Network, a network for the Ellen DeGeneres show, and rapper 50 Cent's social network. Ning has a number of competitors, including KickApps and Crowdvine, but at this time, it was leading the marketing because of its user base. It is used by organisations and schools. Organisations use it for advertisement and academics and teachers used it to set up networks and blogs for their classes instead of relying on more commercial platforms like Facebook or MySpace.
